Saint Charbel: The Hermit of Lebanon Who Continues to Heal the World

There are saints who lived quietly, far from the noise of the world — and yet their presence continues to echo across centuries. Saint Charbel Makhlouf is one of them.

Born in 1828 in the mountain village of Beka-Kafra, Lebanon, Charbel felt called to religious life from a young age. At 23, he left his family home in the middle of the night, leaving behind a note that read: "I am going to serve God." He entered the Maronite Order and was ordained a priest in 1859, eventually withdrawing to live as a hermit at the Hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul near the Annaya Monastery.

For 23 years, Saint Charbel lived in radical simplicity — fasting, praying, and offering Mass daily. He was known for his deep humility and his extraordinary union with God. He passed away on Christmas Eve, 1898, after suffering a stroke during Mass.

The Miracles That Followed

What happened after his death is what the world could not ignore. A bright light was reported emanating from his tomb for 45 days. His body was found incorrupt — perfectly preserved — and has remained so to this day. Thousands of miraculous healings have been attributed to his intercession, including the healing of paralysis, cancer, and blindness. He was canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1977.

Saint Charbel is the patron of Lebanon and is venerated by Catholics and Christians worldwide, particularly within Lebanese and Middle Eastern communities here in Australia.
